Pulmonary Congestion

Pulmonary congestion (pulmonary edema) is a condition marked by swelling and/or fluid accumulation in the lungs. If untreated it can lead to respiratory failure. It is caused by one of two mechanisms. Either the heart fails to remove fluid from the lungs, or there is a direct injury to the lungs. Treatment depends on the cause but in all cases aims to restore respiratory function.
