Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition that results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field. It generally affects older adults and is a major cause of blindness amongst people over 50 years old. Macular degeneration can make reading or recognizing faces difficult or impossible. Enough peripheral vision, however, remains in tact to allow other activities of life. Age remains the major risk factor, although genetics and specific diseases have been linked.
