Laryngitis

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx. It causes a rough voice or the inability to speak at all. Laryngitis has many causes including a viral, bacterial or fungal infection, overuse of vocal cords, smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. In addition to difficulty speaking, symptoms of laryngitis include sore throat, coughing, difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph nodes or fever. Treatment generally aims to address to underlying infection or behavior that is causing the condition.
