Endophthalmitis is the inflammation of the internal coats of the eye. It is the tragic result of some unfortunate eye surgeries in which the eye becomes infected by bacteria or fungi leading to blindness and possibly the removal of the eye itself. It can also be caused by a penetrating injury or by getting a foreign object stuck in one's eye. Endophthalmitis is frequently accompanied by intense pain and loss of vision. Treatment involves an intense course of antibiotics and or surgery.
